How it all began

anim_wagtail

Ever since my childhood I wanted nothing more than a little dog. But I had to wait until I was grown-up before my wish finally came true.

During the years I spent in Canada I noticed very soon the little female Toy Terrier/Chihuahua mix called Lady that my neighbor Johnny had. I knew then I just had to have such a tiny and fearless dog like this little Lady was.  So why not get a Chihuahua since this breed was very popular in Canada the time I was there - beginning of the Seventies. In Germany I saw them only on pictures before and they were very rare by then.

And here she is - my very first Chihuahua - Penny

or more precisely:  “Miamigo´s Pretty Pepita” - born in 1970. Her breeder, Ms. Joy Spearman of  Waterhen, Manitoba brought her all the way to  Saskatchewan, where I used to live by then. I had told Joy that I would like to breed so she chose a female of a good size for me.

According to the breed´s appearance of today the breed standard has changed a bit but at that time I was very happy about having a dog like Penny and she was indeed very good for breeding.  Unfortunately we lost her due to an accident. She was hit by a car near our farm although she hardly ever left it. But I knew for sure that even after loosing Penny so early I wanted another Chihuahua. I then met Mrs. Marjorie Blacklaws of Tisdale, Sask. - breeder of the Mc Kern Chihuahuas. There I got some Chihuahuas that were even to accompany me back to Germany later on.  They were:  McKern´s Lazy Dee (Zee), McKern´s Tonia, Viajero´s Melody, McKern´s Diana, McKern´s Polara, McKern´s Spice und McKern´s Rebecca Cita.

It just happened by that time that the breeder wanted to reduce her kennel so I was lucky enough to get them at that time.

left McKern´s Rebecca Cita and right her dam McKern´s Tonia   - sorry an old picture..

melody

The picture above shows Viajero´s Melody. She was my favourite. The first thing she did after I got her home was to bite me but afterwards we were the best of friends. She was everywhere I was and very few people besides me were allowed to pet her.

Well, here they are again mind you they are from the Seventies. In my opinion they were very pretty for that times but even today they would not have to hide themselves .... :-)))

Our Name

I choose the name Tijuana´s because during my stay in Canada I enjoyed the music of  Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass. Although the city of Tijuana is rather connected to New-Mexico. But our Chihuahuas of the presence have been developed by American breeders too although Mexico is still considered to be the country of their orign.  The music you hear is Herb Alpert´s title “Spanish Flea”.

Two of my  Chihuahuas were imported from  Edith Varga, USA, and were descendants of her very famous male Varga´s Tijuana Brass. So there are     2 good reasons already. And there is a 3rd. reason: I like that name and it fits the breed  - at least I think so..  :-)

You can see the Chihuahuas we breed with on our many pictures on this site. Just check with our males and females to see the dogs we breed with now. You will find pedigrees too and I am working on including pictures of their ancestors as well very soon. Further you will find a bit about our   breeding-criteria and principles  as well as a few tips on what to look for when wanting to get a Chihuahua. These chapters I am still working on and they will be added step by step.

We also have a remembrance page for those Chihuahuas no longer with us and some  funny things as well. I am a member of the Hoflin Mailing List and there I found wonderful people from all parts of the world with whom I can exchange myself about all subjects of interrest and some of them I would just like to share with you.

Before you leave these pictures show one puppy each of my two A-litters (we have to start with A and go all the way through the alphabet to name our dogs) and then start all over.  (i.e. the first litter was born here at the end of 1983 and the 2nd litter ending of 1996 - 13 years later)
